Two dimensional works tend to focus primarily on embroidery and painting, sometimes combined. Roden’s painting are executed in a bold, naive style with a limited colour palette, evocative of Fairground Freak Shows and Folk Art.
Her love of embroidery was passed down to her as a child from a Grandmother who taught her a few basic stitches. Often combining embroidery with text, she eschews the regimented techniques of needlepoint and counted cross stitch in favour of a more fluid and versatile style, combining stitches and colours in response to content and medium and often embroidering directly onto stretched, primed canvas. Embroidery also often features heavily in her three-dimensional works.
